Sever's disease (known clinically as calcaneal apophysitis) is one of the most common causes of heel pain in growing children and adolescents aged 8 to 14. It occurs when the growth plate in the back of the heel bone (calcaneus) becomes inflamed due to repetitive physical stress during growth spurts.

Recognizing Symptoms in Active Children

Because young bones grow faster than surrounding tendons, running and jumping pull tightly against the growth plate. Watch for:

  • Heel pain or tenderness during or immediately after sports practice.
  • Limping or walking on tiptoes to keep pressure off the back of the heels.
  • Pain when gently squeezing the sides of the heel bone.
  • Tight calf muscles and discomfort similar to Heel Pain or Achilles Tendonitis.

Gentle & Effective Care for Children

Sever's disease is temporary, causes no permanent bone damage, and resolves as the growth plate matures. Conservative care includes:

  • Off-Loading & Cushioning: Shock-absorbing gel heel cups or pediatric Custom Orthotics to elevate the heel and relieve Achilles tension.
  • Stretching & Ice Therapy: Calf muscle stretching routines and ice application after sports activity.
  • Supportive Youth Shoes: Fitting active children with supportive athletic shoes from our Recommended Shoe List.

When should you see a podiatrist?

A podiatric physician and surgeon is trained specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of the foot and lower leg — including the neurological, circulatory, skin and musculoskeletal systems (bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves). If pain lasts more than a few days, keeps you from walking normally, or you have diabetes, get it checked.
